What is the diabetic Foot?
The diabetic foot is an ischemic infectious process in the feet of diabetic patients. It's known that diabetic patients are more susceptible to present vascular diseases due to the fact that diabetes accelerates atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic arteries present a poor blood flow, causing poor tissue healing. Also, diabetic patients may present wounds in toes or heels secondary to a lack of sensibility originated by the diabetic neuropathy. A poor blood flow in an open wound predisposes to infection.
How do we treat it?
These patients need special care, they should undergo a vascular evaluation to detect circulatory deficit, and assess any open wounds. Sometimes even evaluate a chirurgic alternative of up to 8 h long to avoid amputating a member. We have participated in several congresses, exposing our different techniques as well as excellent results in saving extremities and they have been highly accepted.
